Open Screening

Monday, 13, Jun 2011 - 18:30 - 21:00

Three documentary films which explore stories of looting and sensational archaeological discoveries in the Mediterranean were screened at the Jordan Museum, in an attempt to explain to children aged 8-12 “why looting matters”.

Viewers discovered how objects had been looted, stolen or retrieved and how they traveled into hidden tombs, foreign countries and ancient civilizations.  They also witnessed the discovery of invaluable artifacts by archaeologists and were encouraged to understand why knowledge of an object’s history is lost when a site is plundered.
The three films screened were:

The Tomb of the Hidden Mummies
The sensational discovery of a cache of hidden mummies in the cliffs of Deir El Bahri, Luxor, Egypt.
A Treasure of Gold
The story of the plunder of Mycenaean tombs in Aidonia, Greece and of the recovery of a treasure made of gold.
Robbing Tombs and Temples in Cyprus
From the looting of Cyprus in the 19th century to a sensational discovery in the village of Agia Eirini by a priest.
The screening was apart of the Witness the Past “Museum Theft Response Plan” Meeting.
Note: the films were screened in English, but are available in Arabic, German and Greek.
